I’m the first to admit that I was very hesitant to get on board the block heel bandwagon. I love a simple pump to elevate any look, but I tend to stick to the basics – not too high (because I can’t do anything above 3.5 inches), a simple stiletto heel (though nothing too thin), and a pointy toe, because I prefer the over rounded toe pumps. a great pair of pumps will instantly dress up your favourite jeans and are the perfect way to make seeming casual pieces like joggers (not the sweat pant kind!) look fantastic, even for work (as seen on my Instagram). But while simple pumps are still everywhere and available in every colour of the rainbow, block heel pumps and sandals are definitely one of the key footwear trends of the season.
There’s no question that block heels are pretty darn great if heels aren’t your friend. They’re naturally more sturdy and because of this, you tend to feel more comfortable and stable when walking in them. The downside is that certain block heels can look very dated and matronly, so bear that in mind when choosing a pair. Zara has done an excellent job of merging the function and practicality of block heels with modern styling, creating two of my favourite pumps at the moment, the red patent and ecru vegan leather heels that are a steal for under $40. These shoes work because they feature a pointed toe, which I personally feel looks more refined and modern that a rounded toe pump, though admittedly, that’s just my take on it. The red ones definitely have a bit of retro vibe and it’s true that the ecru version can be hard to wear, but with the right outfit pieces, both can be sophisticated and fun. Steve Madden, Marc Fisher, and H&M have all created some great block heel pumps this spring, as seen below.

Block heel sandals and mules are also seeing a surge in popularity and again, they’re a great way to add some height (with stability) to your spring/summer look. These sandals from Zara are cute and fun, while these mule sandals are a fantastic dressed-up option for the summer months. Vince Camuto, Stuart Weitzman, and Steve Madden have also created some gorgeous options, including a block heel update to the ubiquitous Nudist sandal.
