It’s the end of November, so I’m sharing a huge Instagram roundup here on the blog. This month featured some fun and cozy outfits, perfect for transitioning into the cold weather (which I hear is really about to rear its ugly head in Alberta – could be -20 Celsius by next week!). So before I pull out the Canada Goose and Sorels, here’s a look back at some pre-snow (and pre-deep freeze) outfits that I loved. I’ve linked all products that are still available and some great alternatives for older pieces that I dug out this month so that you can easily recreate any looks that you loved.
Casual in Olive and Gingham
By far my favourite (and Instagram’s!) casual outfit of the month, I was dying to wear this combination back in October, but it was too cold! When the brief warm spell hit near the beginning of November, I took the opportunity to put this look together and I loved it so much, I tried a variation of it (with a wool coat over top) late last week. This jacket is by far one of my favourite pieces I found this fall because it fits like a dream and it’s great for layering. Whether you chose gingham or plaid, this look is perfect for the weekend or for casual Friday at the office (especially if you add some pearls!).
Last fall, I picked up a gorgeous black and wine buffalo plaid shirtdress by B.B Dakota at Nordstrom and it’s still a closet favourite. This year, I found a flannel version at H&M in olive and black and it love it nearly as much! Both look great with a cozy long cardigan and tights or with over the knee boots to dress it up a bit. Although my wine version is no longer available, I found some great alternatives which I’ve linked below.
(Not A) Sweater Dress
This is not actually a sweater dress. It is, in fact, a tunic sweater, but I just could not make it work very well beyond the first look above. So, with a little bit of thread and literally no skill, I sewed up the split sides to make a dress. I like it layered over a simple black slip dress for some interest but it would also look great with vegan leather leggings. And trust me when I say that it was dead easy to sew up (I can knit but I can’t sew to save my life!).
I love plaid. I especially love plaid around the holidays (who doesn’t?) and that’s when I picked up this J. Crew plaid shirt last year. It was so popular that both J. Crew and J. Crew Factory brought it back and fortunately, you can still get your hands on it. Although I am planning to share a more in-depth post about how to style a plaid shirt, here’s a quick peek at one way I styled it.
Cozy Sweaters & Comfy Leggings
H&M has really hit the mark this year when it comes to sweaters. Everything I was looking for in a cozy sweater they have delivered on, and this soft funnel-neck sweater is no exception. I love it with jeans and leggings for a casual day, but paired with vegan leather leggings and over-the-knee boots, it’s even better. I have it in two of the four available colours and had to literally stop myself from buying more (no judgement if you pick up all four colours though). I also love this simple navy pullover (which also comes in nearly a dozen colours – I also have it in cream) with vegan leather leggings. Elegant and understated, but dressed up with over-the-knee boots.
I love the versatility of these easy, layered looks that are perfect for the office, for a weekend coffee date, or for a night out on the town. The best part is that so many of these pieces are both affordable and classic, which is a perfect combination in my books!
Enjoy the pretty things in life,
