Continuing on with my fall and winter colour series, this week I’m talking about mustard yellow, one of the most popular colours to be found this fall. While it makes perfect sense as an autumn colour, I also love the idea of wearing mustard this winter for a bright pop of colour, which, lets face it, we all need during the cooler months.
Mustard yellow can be found in all kinds of clothing pieces this year and in a variety of shades, from deeper brown-hued tones, to brights that remind you of a French’s mustard bottle (which isn’t necessarily a bad thing – it will definitely brighten a dreary day)! It is most popular in cardigans and sweaters, which of course I love, but it’s also been prominent in accessories like scarves and bags. The best part of mustard yellow is that it is somewhat unexpected; while people gravitate to grey (as discussed here), black and navy in the winter months, mustard yellow is such a fun alternative that pairs so well with these shades, particularly navy and grey. I also love it paired with hints of burgundy or even a deep forest green for something different. It looks great with denim and white as well, so wearing a cozy mustard cardigan with your favourite white tee and skinny jeans makes for a perfect weekend look.
Here are my top picks for some great mustard sweaters and accessories, all of which are under $50 (with the exception of the Maysey Shoulder Bag, which is more of an investment piece):
Mustard Fine-Knit Sweater – This is my favourite lightweight sweater (which I have in navy and cream) in a gorgeous deeper mustard shade. It would look fantastic with vegan leather leggings and sleek pumps for a simple workday look.
Mustard Crepe Woven Top – Another piece that can easily be dressed up, I love that this one has short sleeves. I love this one paired with a black or navy jacket and skinny jeans.
Marled Waffle Knit Sweater – Another darker mustard piece, this sweater has a great casual vibe to it.
Mustard Ribbed Knit Cardigan – Cardigans are one of the most popular items in mustard this season. I love this simple piece because it’s a slightly darker shade.
V-Cut Back Sweater – I love the unexpected open back of this lighter mustard sweater. It’s such a pretty detail.
Ribbed Dolman Cardigan – I’m a huge fan of dolman sleeves and this cardigan looks so incredibly cozy. It’s a must-have.
Mustard Frayed Oblong Scarf – I love the brightness of this scarf (and the great price) which you can easily wear all day.
Mustard Gingham Woven Scarf – Technically, this is a men’s scarf, but I literally do. not. care. It’s super cute and would go with just about anything.
Mustard Grid Print Scarf – This pretty scarf looks so soft and the colour and print are so pretty.
Diamond-Patterned Oblong Scarf – This thick scarf is the epitome of coziness and so perfect for cold winter mornings.
Mustard Suede Shoulder Bag – A more affordable option for a mustard suede bag, I love the rectangular shape of this bag.
Maysey Shoulder Bag – If you’re looking for an investment piece in mustard, this is for you. I love the colour of this oversized suede bag.
Over-the-Knee Ruffled Socks – I love otk socks, and these ones are too cute with the ruffled top.
Mustard Twist-Front Headband – A perfect way to keep your ears toasty warm on cold days, this mustard headband is such a pretty shade.
Mustard is so popular this fall and I can understand why. It’s different, it’s fun, and it’s warm, which is so nice in the cooler months. If you want to add some great colour to your wardrobe, mustard is a great place to start.
Enjoy the pretty things in life,
