I am a self-professed skincare product junkie. I have accumulated so many creams, lotions, cleansers, scrubs, and masques that I could probably go without buying anything new for about two years. If a breakout popped up, I’d try this product or that product. When the sun damaged my skin this summer, I pulled out a concoction of brightening products (which did improve my breakout marks and sunspots). But my skin was not having it.
It needed a very serious detox.
Enter Pura Botanicals, the all-natural apothecary line handcrafted in Edmonton by Lane Edwards and her team in the most beautiful studio space I have ever seen. Pura was inspired by Lane’s childhood fascination for making various potions and concoctions in her backyard and grown-up her desire to create natural skincare and perfume products that pamper and treat your skin without harsh chemicals or other additives.
As a side note, Lane and her lovely mother-in-law Cathy Edwards, Pura’s Director of Operations, are probably two of the sweetest women I have ever met! They welcome you into the Pura studio with such open arms that you honestly feel like you are having a wonderful coffee date with your best friends. But, on to the products.
Pura encourages treating yourself to a Morning Ritual and an Evening Ritual, combining products that will treat your skin in the most natural way possible. The three key products I tried are all part of both rituals and you can supplement with additional Pura treatments to customize your personal routine (you can look at the whole skincare product line here and I am sharing a few others I love later in the post).
Countess Cleansing Nectar
The Countess Cleansing Nectar ($46.00 for 118 ml) is such a lavish way to clean your skin. It feels like a cross between an oil and a cream cleanser that melts away makeup and impurities before lightly foaming when you rinse with water. The combination of neroli, French lavender, Frankincense, sweet orange, and calendula smells amazing and leaves skin feeling smooth and hydrated. After years of using cleansers that left my skin feeling either stripped or greasy, this one leaves my skin feeling just clean. I love that.
I started using Pura products at the end of August, just as my skin rebellion hit full swing. My entire chin area was completely broken out when I met with Lane and we walked through the products. The combination of tea tree, lemongrass and rosemary in the Clarifying Mist ($34.00 for 59 ml) was perfect for taming my angry skin. I love the fact that unlike many traditional toners, this is a mist that you spray on your face, rather than apply with a cotton ball or pad. That way, all of the product is actually ON your face. I am not generally a fan of the smell of tea tree (in fact, I can’t stand it), but the addition of lemongrass and rosemary make this one smell beautiful (and only very, very faintly of tea tree, if like me, you aren’t a fan).
For those whose skin is more well-behaved than mine, the Botanical Bloom Essence ($38.00 for 59 ml) is an excellent choice that includes my tried and true toner – witch hazel, as well as sandalwood, aloe vera and rose.
Sweet Face Restorative Daily Moisturizer
This is hands down the best moisturizer I have ever used. The Sweet Face Restorative Daily Moisturizer is soothing and hydrating in a way no other moisturizer I’ve used has been. Now I will admit that with my combination-oily skin, I find this moisturizer a bit too much for daytime (full disclosure, I continued to use my favourite vitamin C cream), as my makeup just would not stay put in my t-zone while wearing it. That said, as the winter months set in and my skin dries out more, I think it will be perfect. It is my favourite part of the Evening Ritual, in part because of the scent (sweet almond, vanilla, and clementine oils combine to make it smell light and divine), but also because it provides excellent hydration without being a heavy night cream.
Next on my must have list are the Lolita Face Drops ($38.00), the Neroli Eye Ritual ($45.00) and the Overnight Watermelon Mask ($58.00). I am a huge fan of the restorative benefits of Vitamin C to treat skin damage, so the Lolita Face Drops are a definitely for me. The Neroli Eye Ritual is lightweight and silky and feels luxurious on the delicate skin of the eye area, which we too-often ignore (and with my lack of sleep since becoming a momma six years ago, I need all the help I can get). The Overnight Watermelon Mask is a customer favourite with very good reason – you put it on at night and wake up with glowing and refreshed skin. (Head over to my Instagram page to find out about the Overnight Watermelon Mask giveaway I am hosting with Pura!)
I cannot emphasize enough that the Pura line smells absolutely amazing. The all-natural ingredients are allowed to speak for themselves and it’s heavenly. In part, that’s because Lane is also a trained perfumer (I seriously want that job) and Pura’s Bespoke Perfume service sounds so wonderful. Pura’s Body Care products are equally inviting and the perfect way to end a long day! In addition to the skincare line that started at all, Pura recently launched Pura Baby and Mama, a nurturing line designed to pamper mamas and their littles. I so wish this had been around when I had my son, not only to pamper me a bit (new mommies deserve so much pampering!) but also to treat his delicate skin.
If you are in the Edmonton area, you should definitely take advantage of the opportunity to visit the beautiful Pura studio (you can find the studio location and hours here). You can also find out more about the creative process in the studio by checking out the Pura Botanicals’ Green Beauty Blog.
Before signing off, I want to say thank you to Lane for such an enjoyable afternoon in the studio, for handpicking the right products for my skincare needs, and for creating such a nurturing product line that we can all share with her.
Enjoy the pretty things in life,
