Is there anyone not wearing chambray this year? It seems to be the most popular fabric of choice for style lovers all over social media and I see it on a regular basis as part of Edmonton street style.
Why is chambray so popular? Well, for starters, a crisp chambray shirt can be one of the most versatile items hanging in your closet. A chambray shirt works equally well in all four seasons (though I would probably stick to a nice chambray sundress on hot summer days), they are available at almost every price point, and can be paired with pretty much everything. I have worn mine with deep indigo skinny jeans and booties (I was a very late convert to the whole denim on denim look and in all honestly, I am still very picky about how I pair various denim items), my favourite white distressed jeans, a classic wool pencil skirt, and even a black sequined skirt on a day that I was feeling particularly adventurous. Ok, full disclosure – I paired this last look with opaque black tights and boots for work back in the winter and I did hear a lot of “Oh, are you going to a party later?” But I didn’t care. It’s still one of my favourite outfits from last year and I will totally wear it again. True style is all about individuality.
Because of their popularity and appeal, there are so many interesting takes on chambray and denim currently available, from light tunics and off-the-shoulder styles to adorable shirt dresses that can be perfect transition pieces as the seasons change. I love these pieces because goodness knows I need something to be excited about as the temperature falls!
My J. Crew chambray shirt, paired with white shorts and a light blanket scarf (another favourite!!) from Zara was perfect for a trip down into the Edmonton river valley a few weeks ago on a slightly cool and overcast day. I know that pretty soon, I’m going to have to put those shorts away. BUT, I will not stop wearing the shirt with my white jeans because I am a firm believer in breaking certain style rules, like not wearing white after Labour Day. And I just might have to pull out that sequined skirt as well. 😉
Enjoy the pretty things in life,
