I love trendy and fun tops, especially in the summer, but if there is one thing I have learned over the years, it’s that investing in trends can be a bit of a disaster. Until such time that I win the lottery (hey, a gal can dream, right?!), spending significant amounts of money on trendier pieces like off-the-shoulder or asymmetrical tops that are super cute now, but will definitely not be around forever just doesn’t make sense. So I’ve learned that when it comes to cute pieces that you want to use to quickly update your wardrobe and try out some trends, go for budget styles instead of spending $100+ on something you might only get one season of wear from. Save the investment for classic staples (see what I mean in this post and this post).
I recently had the opportunity to work with SheIn, an online retailer that specializes in trendy pieces at a price point that makes it easy to try out new styles that may not last. I’ve talked before about my experiences with SheIn here and here, but I have to say that my recent picks have impressed me even more. The quality was better than some previous items I’ve tried and the prices were very good. I will say that my biggest complaint with SheIn is that shipping time takes a quite a while (anywhere from three to four weeks in my experience), so bear that in mind when thinking about sizing and returns and in Canada, you will have to pay duty, but honestly, we’re probably used to that by now (very irritating).
Ok, on to the fun stuff! Today I’m sharing two trendier looks that I love for the transitional weather we are having in Alberta at the moment. The days are definitely warming up, but it’s not super hot yet, so pairing light and summery tops with jeans is a great combination.
I am a big fan of off-the-shoulder tops, which of course are EVERYWHERE this year, but I really love that this one is a bit different – it is a gorgeous steel blue (though the description online says navy) with thin white stripes and the fabric does not wrinkle, which has been a huge annoyance with some other off-the-shoulder tops I’ve bought this year. The somewhat puffed sleeves can be worn long or pulled up a bit, as I did. The length is perfect – you can do a half tuck or leave it out and I looks great, hitting right at the hipbone. I do have a shorter torso, so bear that in mind as well. This top does run a tiny bit big – I am wearing a X-Small and am normally a size 2-4 (an XS should normally fit 0-2). For this look, I paired it with my favourite Current/Elliot Stiletto Skinny jeans, Zara block-heel pumps (similar here), and Zara bag (from last season – find similar here and here). Simple pieces that look great together for an afternoon of drinks on the patio or a summer date night.
The second featured item is an ivory dolman sleeve blouse with an interesting asymmetrical hemline. The SheIn site calls this top white, but it really is more of an ivory, which is what I was looking for, but bear that in mind if you are hoping it is a true white. This top reminds me of the blogger favourite Lush tunic top from Nordstrom, but without the oversized fit of the Lush tunic, which I honestly am starting to find a bit difficult to work with. The fabric is nearly identical but the fit is more true to size – I am wearing a Small and it fits me perfectly. For a casual workday look, I paired the SheIn top with my distressed American Eagle skinny jeans (which I cut the bottoms off of myself, super easy), the Zara block-heel pumps again (similar here) and my classic Louis Vuitton Speedy 30 bag. Despite the simplicity of this look, I received endless compliments on it, and I will definitely be wearing it again soon.
There are so many cute trendy styles this summer (pompoms, one-shoulder tops, asymmetrical everything) and you can definitely find them at a variety of price points. I shared some higher priced trendy tops here, and while I love them, I’m really a fan of saving money on trends and investing in staple pieces like classic sweaters, tried and true handbags, and simple dresses. For trends, I definitely gravitate to sites like SheIn and I have not been disappointed.
Stay tuned for my third SheIn pick on the blog soon – the most adorable gingham peplum top I ever did see!
