I have been a faithful user of l’Oréal’s Infallible Pro Matte Foundation (as seen here) for ages. In fact, I shared exactly how I incorporate it and my favourite Neutrogena CC cream into my makeup routine just a few weeks ago. But as often happens, I was craving a new foundation – I really wanted to see what else was out there and whether I was missing out on something different. I got lucky when a sweet friend shared several new foundations with me, including Chanel Les Beiges Healthy Glow Foundation, Marc Jacobs Re(marc)able Full Coverage Foundation (which I have yet to try – I’m waiting until I need to cover up a pesky breakout, which will inevitable come), and Smashbox Studio Skin 15 Hour Hydrating Foundation. I initially hesitated trying the Smashbox pick because I had visions of it making my combination skin too oily. I started with Chanel Les Beiges, which was nice, but it did not do anything for the dry skin I’ve been struggling with all winter.
So I decided to give the Smashbox Studio Skin a whirl, along with the Photo Finish Primer Water, and Photo Op Under Eye Brightener and I instantly fell in love, not only with each product individually, but with the combination of the three together. The have become my secret skin weapon and I’m not giving them up anytime soon.
There are a number of things I love about this foundation. One, it doesn’t leave my skin feeling dried out – in fact, I really do feel that it is far more moisturizing than other foundations I’ve tried and right now, that’s what my skin needs. However, if I’m being realistic, that may not make it my friend in the more humid summer months. Second (and third and fourth), the consistency, coverage, and finish are great – I don’t need to use a ton of product to get a smooth, even look and despite being moisturizing, it has a great matte finish. Studio Skin provides perfect medium coverage that hides minor imperfections and evens out the skin tone, which is exactly what I was looking for. It comes in 22 shades and lives up to it’s promise of lasting for 15 hours – of all the foundations I have tried, this is the only one that has truly lasted all day long (and trust me, most days, my makeup is on by 6:30 AM).
One small con – this foundation does not work well as a concealer. What do I mean? Well, with the Infallible foundation, I could dot a small amount on a blemish after applying my foundation base for perfect coverage. I haven’t had any luck doing that with this foundation, but that really a small downside. I use my NYX Wonder Stick pencil instead.
I have been struggling with dull and dark areas under my eyes and nothing worked to makes them better until this. I’ve tried Benefit Watt’s Up, YSL Touch Éclat, even a small dab of Benefit’s High Beam to try and brighten things up, with no luck. Every product ended up creasing or not covering anything at all. But this product is like liquid gold. I dot on the small spots and tap to blend and voila! I look somewhat awake, ha ha ha!
In all seriousness, I truly adore this product, probably more than any other I’ve tried in months and I have not one bad thing to say about it!
This is a do-it-all product, and I love that. I’m not always the best at multitasking, but I love it when my makeup products do and this is one of the best. Use it as a primer, as a setting spray, or to refresh your makeup – I’ve done all three and I love the results. A good setting spray really helps to keep makeup in place, especially if you have combination skin. What I really love about this particular spray is that it set my makeup and keeps the greasies away, but without drying the skin, which has been so important for me this winter. It also helps makeup to apply more smoothly and since I’m too lazy to apply fifteen different product (ok, yes I know I’m exaggerating), I love that I can quickly spray this on and go straight to foundation.
