It’s no secret (at least on the blog) that I struggle with combination skin. In some ways, it’s great (they say that combination and oily skin wrinkles less quickly than dry skin does), but it can also be a major pain when it comes to makeup.
I am constantly trying to find great products that will help my skin look flawless all day, no matter what the temperature, humidity, or season. I swear by L’Oréal’s Infallible Mega Fixing Makeup Spray to keep my makeup set – at less than half the price of Urban Decay’s All Nighter Makeup Setting Spray, it is a makeup steal that actually works. When I forget to use it, I notice a difference, no matter what foundation or CC cream I am using. That said, I’ve still struggled to keep my t-zone, in particular, my nose, looking shine-free and poreless.
My new holy grail of foundations is L’Oréal’s Infallible Pro-Matte Foundation, which is probably the best drugstore foundation that I have ever tried. Despite being a matte foundation, the consistency is not heavy, cakey, or drying and when applied using a damp blending sponge (my preference over a foundation brush), it goes on very smoothly. The finish is natural and needs virtually no touch ups – something that I cannot say for any other foundation I have tried, including L’Oréal’s True Match and True Match Lumi, my previous favourites. True, I’ve not been able to test this one in a humid environment (I live in Alberta, after all) but it definitely stands up to the warm temperatures Alberta had been having this May. The one drawback is the limited colours (which was not an issue for me – I wear Shell Beige and it matches my spring skin tone perfectly), which may make it difficult to match to your skin. That said, the coverage, lasting power, and price make it worth blending a couple of shades to get the right fit.
My second matte skin holy grail product this year was highly rated by Total Beauty (you can read the article here) as one of the best powders to keep your skin flawless and shine-free (the average rating for this powder was 9.0 out of 10.0) and is a complete steal at under $5! NYC Smooth Skin Pressed Face Powder is amazing for keeping oiliness at bay! A light tap of this on my nose, forehead, and chin set my foundation, left my nose looking poreless (practically a miracle for me), and I literally only touched up my t-zone area once during an eight hour work day! I wear this powder in Warm Beige and I cannot emphasize how impressed with it I am.
FYI – When it comes to drugstore makeup, you’ll find that I nearly always link Walmart as the ‘where to buy’ location. This is because in Canada, it’s where you will definitely find the best prices on almost all drugstore brands and I hate paying too much for items that are available practically everywhere at a variety of prices. (That way, I can buy more things, like another bottle of Essie nail polish, which I do not need!)
With summer heat just around the corner, keeping my oily skin at bay is a definite concern, but after testing these products, I’m feeling pretty confident that I’ll have the upper hand this year.
Enjoy the pretty things in life,
