If there is one item that has become my signature piece over the last year or so, it’s leather leggings. I literally wear those things with anything (and they can be as caliente as Franks Red Hot sauce) – sweaters, dressy blouses, casual plaid shirts, even dresses; you name it, I’ve probably paired it with leather leggings (or I will, soon enough). I love that a good pair of leather leggings will dress up just about any top you have hanging in your closet and that they can take a simple look from daytime to a night out on the town.
I stick to vegan leather options for a couple of key reasons: one, they are easy to keep clean (you literally throw them in the washing machine like any other pair of pants); and two, they are more affordable than traditional leather pants and leggings. I’ve tried a few different kinds as well. My first pair, with a hidden ankle zip and with a fit that was closer to cigarette pants, were from H&M and were comfortable and easy to style, though I found that they looked better with heels or ballet flats rather than boots or booties. In the fall, I tried a more tapered, true legging-style version from Vero Moda (via Hudson’s’ Bay – last seen here) that could be cut to any desired length, which made them versatile (for the record, I left mine alone and did not cut them).
After drooling over them in store and online for months, I recently (finally!) broke down and picked up the Wilfred Free Daria pants in vegan leather from Aritzia and I have to say, these are the Holy Grail of pants. They fit like a glove, have tons of stretch and are so comfortable that I forget I am wearing them. These leggings are so stretchy that the stylist in my local Aritzia store immediately recommended that I purchase a pair two sizes down from the pair I initially picked up (for the record, I wear an XS). I looked at her like she was nuts (especially when she advised that I should break a sweat trying to put them on), but went with it anyway. She. Was. Right. On all accounts. Yes, it took a lot of effort to put them on the first time (my five year old shopping partner in crime got a major kick out of that), yes, the XS was perfect, like she said it would, and yes, those suckers really do stretch. Not only do they stretch, but they last – the store manager was wearing a pair she’d had for five years (and therefore washed hundreds of time) and they still looked perfect.
The price tag seems a bit steep at first – $135 – but I CANNOT emphasize enough that it is totally worth it. If I could get away with wearing them every. single. day. I absolutely would, no question. They are the best pants I’ve ever owned, and you need to own them too.
For this look, I paired mine with an easy chambray shirt, black pumps and bag, pearls and my favourite camel coat. Accessories and the leggings dress up an otherwise casual look so that it’s work appropriate.
Yes, I know I wear these pants a lot. No, I’m not going to stop. Yes, you need to have them. I just can’t emphasize how much I love them enough.
Enjoy the pretty things in life,
